In ancient philosophy politics also embraced what we call ethics. They serve as a corrective to the myth of American innocence, the false comforts of moral righteousness, which would insulate us from what Cornel West calls the funk of life—the fact, as Baldwin put it, that life is inescapably tragic: Life is tragic simply because the earth turns and the sun inexorably rises and sets, and one day, for each of us, the sun will go down for the last, last time.
